Friend, Dear Friend, There's an old Slovakian proverb, "Pure water is the world's first and foremost medicine." But right now in California, this most precious resource is being poisoned. As of today, more than 24,000,000,000 gallons have been contaminated by fracking and other extreme oil production -- and that number is literally growing by the minute. Worse yet, State officials allowed oil and gas companies to pump nearly three billion gallons of waste water into freshwater aquifers that could have been used for drinking water and irrigation1 -- that's just beyond fracked up and it gets fracking worse. This summer, while California is experiencing one of its worst droughts in history, oil and gas companies are selling contaminated waste water to farmers to use for irrigation.2 Big Oil not only gets away with poisoning the most important resource to sustain life, but they also earn an extra profit by selling back the poison as a farming tool. It also means all of us are at risk, since California grows 90 percent of the grapes, 95 percent of the broccoli and more than half the bell peppers Americans eat every year - just to name a few of the biggest crops. This is beyond fracked up, and that's why we need to take action. We've teamed up with a coalition of fracktivists all across America to send Governor Jerry Brown a message: Keep our food and water safe by ending fracking and extreme energy production in California now. Governor Brown should know better. He claims that he wants to be a climate and environmental champion who leads California to a clean energy revolution.3 But his actions don't match his bold claims. His wants to issue $10,000 fines to residents who don't comply with new water-use restrictions,4 but refuses to go after the one industry doing the most damage to California's water. While everyone else is expected to cut back on their water use, polluters have been permitted to contaminate nearly two million gallons of freshwater a day.5 They say, No sane civilization poisons its own water supply." Right now, California is acting totally insane by not only poisoning the water, but allowing the polluters to sell it to the folks who produce our food. Where I live, in New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo realized the dangers of fracking to public health and banned the practice.6 It's time for Jerry Brown to exercise the same wisdom and protect our water and food from extreme energy.
