Next week, a bunch of movie stars and actors will descend on the Capitol to oppose offshore oil drilling and seismic testing. Before they do, can you donate here to help us run ads to stop the oil exploration, save whales and protect our oceans and climate?
Celebrities like Ted Danson, known for his role in “Cheers,” Sam Waterston, familiar from “Law & Order,” and Kate Walsh, most famous from “Grey’s Anatomy,” are participating in a major push against industrial offshore drilling in the Atlantic Ocean.1
They'll be backed up by state and federal officials from South Carolina, the state with the most to lose when seismic testing for oil starts blasting our oceans every 10 seconds. On of them is South Carolina State Sen. John Courson (R-Richland) who says the practice is incompatible with the state’s economy and its environment. “Many of us who are elected officials who do not represent coastal areas are also opposed to offshore drilling in South Carolina,’’ Courson said during a conservation briefing Wednesday. “It just doesn’t make sense, particularly when one looks at the fact that economic and environmental interests interlock in South Carolina.’’2 Just goes to show you that the opposition to offshore drilling in the Palmetto State is a bi-partisan issue because the people know that climate catastrophe affects us all.
This is our moment! Donate here to help us run newspaper ads in South Carolina to show President Obama and everyone that we want an immediate halt to offshore oil exploration in the Southeast before Bureau Of Ocean Energy Management opens the lease program!
It’s not even clear how much oil and gas is off the Eastern seaboard where seismic testing would be most intensively used. Previous studies by Big Oil have ignored the fact that the Atlantic coast is already home to a $15 billion-a-year ocean economy built on tourism and sustainable fisheries -- all of which is put in jeopardy by oil and gas development.3
This is our moment to raise our voices and stop it! The expanded use of seismic testing could devastate marine life, harming fisheries and coastal economies, especially in South Carolina. But if we act fast, we can dial up the volume on this issue right when President Obama is sure to be listening. Donate $5 or $10 to make sure Nikki Halley, President Obama and everyone sees that we want an immediate halt to offshore oil exploration and then share with your networks through social media and email.
Thank you for everything you do,
