Our oceans are being blasted every 10 seconds and it's killing marine life. Click here to tell Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell to stop deafening the whales in search of oil.
BIG NEWS: Yesterday, Washington, D.C., became the largest city in the world to formally oppose offshore drilling and seismic air gun blasting when its city council voted in opposition unanimously, joining a number of other American states and cities that have done the same.1
Communities along the Gulf Coast have endured immense devastation since the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon blowout off the Gulf Coast. They have seen an additional 10,000 spills since then, and as a result have watched the economic decline of vital industries such as fishing and tourism.2
Despite the known consequences of offshore drilling, the Atlantic coast could become a hub for this extreme practice in the next five years if a plan proposed by the Obama administration goes through.3 Coastal towns along the Atlantic are now stepping up to protect our coasts and climate by keeping fossil fuels safely in the ground.
Offshore drilling has proven to be dirty and dangerous. And despite demand for cleaner sources of energy, the increase in affordable renewable options, and the climate agreement reached last year in Paris, Big Oil’s thirst for more is not dead yet -- nor is the threat they pose to our coastal waters and communities.
Let's show the world that we value our oceans and permanently remove the Atlantic from the table of all future oil and gas exploration and development. Click here to protect marine life, stop new oil exploration and prevent another oil spill by putting a stop off-shore seismic surveys -- and tell your friends too!
That's right, the Obama administration -- the same one that has repeatedly positioned itself as a leader on climate change -- is laying out the plan to lease offshore oil to the usual suspects like Exxon, Shell, Chevron and others in the coming years.4
Ten Senate Democrats, including Sens. Jeff Merkley, Sheldon Whitehouse and Elizabeth Warren, sent a letter to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell Wednesday, calling on her to stop the upcoming lease sale for oil and gas development in the Atlantic, and to terminate existing, non-producing leases. "While we applaud the Administration’s efforts to combat climate change ... we are troubled by the inherent contradiction in the Department of Interior’s proposal to expand the leasing of public waters and facilitate the development of new fossil fuels reserves," they wrote.
Industry studies and the region’s own governors ignore the fact that there is already an existing economy along the Atlantic coast, a $15 billion-a-year ocean economy that is built on tourism and fisheries. Both would be put in jeopardy by oil and gas development.3
It is time to raise our voices and keep oil rigs out of our oceans! Click here to put a stop to oil leases and seismic testing off the East Coast and share with your online network through social media and email.
