This May, we're breaking free from fossil fuels with a series of bold actions across the U.S. Chip in to help us support the event in Philadelphia this week, and a generous pair of donors will match your donation dollar-for-dollar.

Friend,

We're teaming up with a global coalition that includes 350.org, Sierra Club and dozens of frontline groups to drive the Break Free 2016 week of actions around the U.S. This week I want to tell you about the event in Philadelphia on May 7 -- one of the first actions planned in the U.S.

For decades, the Philadelphia Energy Solutions (PES) oil refinery has been making people sick. The refinery causes over two-thirds of toxic releases in the whole city, where children, many of them people of color, suffer from asthma at twice the national average. And every day, the refinery puts more and more global warming pollution into the air that causes stronger storms, heat waves and rising seas.

Now the refinery wants to expand and turn Philadelphia into the “Houston of the Northeast.” We know the refinery’s pollution hits low-income neighborhoods and communities of color first and worst. It’s part of an economy that privileges the few over the many. Its effects are also global, putting our climate into crisis.

On May 7th, I'll join hundreds of activists in the streets to reclaim our Right to Breathe. But to make the event a success, the local organizers need our support. And to make it easy, two generous donors have pledged $1,000 in matching contributions if we can raise $1,000 this week. That's right, if you donate now and help us hit our goal, these two Philadelphia angels will match your donation dollar for dollar and we can send $2,000 right away to the first U.S. Break Free Action on our map.

For years local groups have fought for clean air and a healthy city by opposing the refinery. On May 7th, they plan to escalate their efforts and bring our concerns to the doors of the oil refinery itself. They are demanding that CEO Phil Rinaldi and PES drop their plans to expand as part of the worldwide action to Break Free from Fossil Fuels.

There are few places across the country where a city has such a clear choice: A fossil fuel future or a living economy. As sea levels and temperatures rise, Rinaldi’s plan threatens the existence of our air, water and climate by locking us into a fossil fuel-economy -- all while Big Oil CEOs make billions at the expense of our planet and our health.

This May, help us break free from fossil fuels together --- and help us start in Philadelphia which is not only one of America's oldest cities, but home to the 2016 Democratic National Convention. That makes it a perfect place to start our fossil free revolution, but only if we can raise the funds to support this action before May.
